It's nearer than you think: Madeira is an easy three hours flying time with direct flights from London, Bristol and Manchester to Funchal (other airports are also starting to run flights to Madeira). Making Madeira increasingly popular as a long weekend retreat. Map of Madeira.
After landing at Funchal and hiring a car (or getting a taxi) the car journey is 55mins to the villa via the new highway running in a series of tunnels across the island.
Directions:From the Airport take the motorway westwards (VR1) signed
“Funchal”; remain on VR1 all the way to Ribeiro Brava where you
join Route 101 following the South Coast and also using new tunnels
signed “Calheta”. Remain on Route 101 past Calheta and Prazeires.
Where the new road ends follow the signs for Faja da Ovelha and
Puerto Moniz for just over a mile, before turning left at a junction,
clearly signed “Faja Da Ovelha”. Pass through the village with
prominent church on your left and 300 yards beyond at a junction
turn right on to road signed “Rua Da Massapez”. After about 200 yards
and on on a sharp left hand bend the villa, clearly named “Quinta
Falcoes” with a black sliding gate is directly in front of you.
The area is called “Sitio dos Falcoes” as shown on the burgundy sign
next to the villa. If you trip over the friendly Precipio Restaurant and
Pub have a drink and admire the view of Paul do Mar below as you have
just missed Rua da Massapez!
